The "Stepping" is one of the biggest events that take place every semester each year throughout the nation. Stepping is not a dance but is very similar to a dance. It is the way African tribes communicated with other tribes to express themselves through rhythmic steps. Over the years, these steps have been modified into more modern steps by Black College Fraternities and Sororities, called a "STEP SHOW". The step shows have at least a sixty-year history starting at predominately Black Colleges and has spread to just about every major university in the United States including some Ivy League Schools. Think "SCHOOL DAYS" vs "DRUMLINE".
The movie also answers some of the stereotypical questions that people have about fraternities and sororities, such as why is there so much animosity between the fraternities and sororities, and what is the purpose of pledging. This movie will show some of the relationships that many gang members have with fraternity members and will also show how students from inner-city deal with college life on and off campus.
"Steppin' Back" shows what most college students and the general public do not see, and that is various forms of community service throughout the city. The movie will describe and explain the aim and purpose of most Black Greek Lettered Organizations such as Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity being the first black fraternity group formed in 1906, followed by Kappa Alpha Psi in 1911 and later Omega Psi Phi in 1911, Phi Beta Sigma in 1914. And the first sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha was founded in 1908, followed by Deta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta, and Sigma Gamma Rho. This movie will show how these Black Greek Lettered Organizations use their networking skills in and out of college to assist those who are not part of these organizations. As you can see the Black Greek Lettered Organizations have a long history and are very deep rooted in the hearts of the African-American communities.
